Garfield Without Garfield

Labels:

Who would have guessed that when you remove Garfield from the Garfield comic strips, the result is an even better comic about schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and the empty desperation of modern life? Friends, meet Jon Arbuckle. Let’s laugh and learn with him on a journey deep into the tortured mind of an isolated young everyman as he fights a losing battle against loneliness in a quiet American suburb. [Source]

Missing NY Pastor Found in an Ohio Strip Club

Labels: ,

RIVERSIDE, Ohio - Police say a pastor who was reported missing from his home in western New York has been found at an Ohio strip club.

A police officer patrolling the K.C. Lounge parking lot Friday morning in the Dayton suburb of Riverside spotted out-of-state license plates on 46-year-old Craig Rhodenizer's car. [Source]

Looks like another Man of God was found doing something that he shouldn't be doing. The funny thing is why did he drive all the way to Ohio to go to a strip club? So here are my thoughts, if this was any other person it wouldn't make news, but since he is a Pastor its in the headlines. Should it make a difference, just because he is a pastor should he be held to a higher level of scrutiny, or is it because he is a pastor that he would be held to a higher standard or morality than the rest of us? Part of me is torn on this because part of me says that yes this pastor needs to be held to a higher standard than the rest of us but the other part know that we are only human and will make mistakes. This is a hard one...what do you think?

15-Year-Old Killed For Not Passing Game

Labels: ,

When 15-year-old Olivier Baptiste refused to hand over the video game he was playing to his 18-year-old friend William Suarez, Suarez pulled out a .32-caliber Smith and Wesson from his waistband and shot Baptiste in the head. This according to police, who have charged the alleged killer with manslaughter, illegal possession of a firearm, assault with a dangerous weapon, and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling. [Source]

Well I guess I shouldn't be surprised by what happens in today's society, but WTF? Apparently witnesses told authorities that Suarez then put the gun down on the kitchen counter and began saying, "This just didn't happen," according to court documents. How screwed up does someone have to be to shoot them over a video game, let alone make a statement that "this just didn't happen...?" The sad thing is people are going to blame it on the video game industry, stating that video games caused this. What I want to know is how did the 18 year old have a handgun? I didn't get my fist handgun until I was 21 years old. Also where were the parents, did they not teach this kid how to share...? I just have one question for this guy...how screwed up are you?

Wal-Mart Sucks!

Labels:

This is disturbing! Wal-Mart has decided to take a severely brain-damaged woman's 417,000 settlement. Debbie Shank who was in a sever traffic accident was awarded 1 million dollars in a lawsuit against the trucking company involved in the crash. Shank who was working at Wal-Mart stocking shelves didn't know that when she signed up for her health plan that in fine print Wal-Mart retained the right to recoup medical expenses if an employee collected damages in a lawsuit. Wal-mart who has already paid out about 470,000 sued Shank for the same amount but was told by the court that they could only recoup what was left in the family trust. The Shanks lost their suit to Wal-Mart. Last summer, the couple appealed the ruling -- but also lost it. Jim Shank stated "They are quite within their rights. But I just wonder if they need it that bad," especially since Wal-mart reported 90 Billion in net sales for 2007's third quarter. Wal-Mart spokesman John Simley, who called Debbie Shank's case "unbelievably sad," replied in a statement: "Wal-Mart's plan is bound by very specific rules. ... We wish it could be more flexible in Mrs. Shank's case since her circumstances are clearly extraordinary, but this is done out of fairness to all associates who contribute to, and benefit from, the plan." [Source]

I don't even know what to say, its not like they need the money. In all fairness I can understand that they are just following rules, but this lady needs the money to help keep her in her rest home. It's not like she is trying to abuse the system. I think that they should let the family keep the money, but I wouldn't hold my breath. I guess I won't be shopping at Wal-mart any time soon.

Here is the CNN story.

A Nude Portrait of French President's Wife will be Auctioned

Labels: ,

French President Nicolas Sarkozy's wife Carla Bruni's nude portrait will be auctioned at Christies in New York next month. The photograph was taken in 1993 when Bruni's a top fashion model, posed for photographer Michel Comte. The Piece is being sold by art collector Gert Elfering. According to Christie's the piece is expected to bring in 3,000 to 4,000 when it is sold on April 10. [Source]

An aide to 40-year-old Mrs Sarkozy said: "Carla is very angry, not to say deeply upset, that a commercial organization has chosen to release this print at such an important time." Her priority is to establish herself on the world stage as a first lady that France can be proud of." This will certainly hurt her reputation; this being the first time that an image of a naked wife of a serving head of state has been sold for profit. [Source...NSFW]

Not sure how this will end up but with having the publicity of this auction could help Sarkozy and his wife out. Just depends on how the public views this, personally I don't think that we should always be in other peoples business. What makes this different is the fact that she is famous. You don't see this happening to someone who isn't. So what makes the difference? Just because someone is famous doesn't mean we need to know everything about them. They are human just like the rest of us, as for this story making headline...who cares if she posed for a nude portrait that is considered art. She was in a different time of her life, where she made a living being a model. Sometimes I believe that the world needs to realign it's priorities, but that is just my rant!

1. Thy strong word did cleave the darkness; At thy speaking it was done.
For created light we thank thee, While thine ordered seasons run.
Alleluia, alleluia! Praise to thee who light dost send!
Alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia without end!

2. Lo, on those who dwelt in darkness, Dark as night and deep as death,
Broke the light of thy salvation, Breathed thine own life-giving breath.
Alleluia, alleluia! Praise to thee who light dost send!
Alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia without end!

3. Thy strong Word bespeaks us righteous, Bright with thine own holiness,
Glorious now, we press toward glory, And our lives our hopes confess.
Alleluia, alleluia! Praise to thee who light dost send!
Alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia without end!

4. From the cross thy wisdom shining Breaketh forth in conqu’ring might;
From the cross forever beameth All thy bright redeeming light.
Alleluia, alleluia! Praise to thee who light dost send!
Alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia without end!

5. Give us lips to sing thy glory, Tongues thy mercy to proclaim,
Throats that shout the hope that fills us, Mouths to speak thy holy name.
Alleluia, alleluia! Praise to thee who light dost send!
Alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia without end!

Teacher Arrested for Doing Naughty Things With Stduents

Labels:

Looks like another teacher was arrested for doing naughty things with students. Mary Jo Spack; a 45 year old teacher at Freedom High School in Tampa, was arrested and charged with having sex with a student. Investigators said that Spack took two male students, ages 17 and 18, to a liquor store and then to a motel. At the motel they met up with 3 others students where they all drank together. Laura McElroy, Tampa police spokeswoman stated that "They over heard the sex in the bathroom, and then saw the student and teacher walk out of the bathroom soaking wet." Many parent and students are shocked this being the second arrest in the past week from Hillsborough County Schools. The first arrest was from a 28 year old Stephanie Ragusa who was charged with having sexual relations with a 14 year old student at Davidsen Middle School. Police have charged Spack with one count of unlawful sex with a minor, and two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. [Source]

I guess this brings a whole new meaning of sex education in the school system. But honestly, this is getting old. You would think that people would know that they will get caught. I mean look at all the others the have been caught, all for what, just to get your jollies from a 17 year old...or even 14 as we see, sometimes it makes me wonder what is going threw their minds...

No Blu-ray for the Xbox!

Labels: ,

Well it looks like the Microsoft has officially nixed the idea of adding blue ray players to the Xbox. So to all of everyone that waited, looks like you will have to settle on their downloads. Microsoft is going to continue to invest into Xbox live which lets users rent movies, even movies that are in HD. Aaron Greenberg, product manager for Xbox 360 said "We're the only console offering digital distribution of entertainment content." [Source]

I'm wondering if with both Apple and Microsoft investing in digital download if the market will take a turn? Though only time will tell on this one. If it does then I would say that Blu-ray may have won the battle but lost the war, but with more and more companies moving to include or have available digital formats, it should be interesting to see where this end.

You can see the results of the auction here. Sadly if I would have had $40,200 I could have been there. Though it really wasn't a date, it was just a meet and greet. So to whom ever won...lucky.

Spitzer's Call Girl Identified

Labels: ,

Well, wouldn't be a day if we didn't find out about some politician's scandal. As you all have probably have heard or seen in the news Eliot Spitzer was involved with a prostitution ring, because of this he has resigned. Today Spitzer call girl was identified. She is a 22 year old aspiring musician from New Jersey. Her name is Ashley Alexandra Dupre. Ashley stated that "I have been alone," she wrote. "I have abused drugs. I have been broke and homeless. But, I survived, on my own. I am here, in NY because of my music." She told the Times she was worried about paying her rent in a ninth-floor Manhattan apartment since her boyfriend recently left her. She said she was considering moving back in with her family in New Jersey.[Source]

I think Dave and Thomas put it best. "As the Governor Spitzer Hooker scandal grows we are finding out some fun stuff about the man. The good news is he picked a girl with looks. If you're gonna do something wrong make sure you do it right! If Dupre only goes for $1,000/hr we would be interested in seeing the ones that top out the 7-diamond scale mentioned above. Too bad Spitzer couldn't pony up the cash for the top of the line model. Guess that's the curse of being a civil servant."[Source]

All I can say...I'm not surprised, this has become a common occurrence is politics. Though I won't be surprised if Ashley's music takes off now that she has the publicity. As for Eliot, I'm not real sure if this will be permanently damage his reputation. In 15 minutes some other politician will screw up. But, I believe that Joseph Bruno says it best here, it's time to move on.

The Forbidden Kingdom

Looks like Jacki Chan and Jet Li are teaming up for this movie. In my opinion the trailer looks great. Take a look below.

Premise:
While hunting down bootleg kung-fu DVDs in a Chinatown pawnshop, Jason makes an extraordinary discovery that sends him hurtling back in time to ancient China. There, Jason is charged with a monumental task: he must free the fabled warrior the Monkey King, who has been imprisoned by the evil Jade Warlord. Jason is joined in his quest by wise kung fu master Lu Yan and a band of misfit warriors including Silent Monk. But only by learning the true precepts of kung fu can Jason hope to succeed - and find a way to get back home.

This looks like it's going to be a great movie. Jacki Chan is a great actor, so is Jet Li. I'm looking forward to seeing these two work together.

Games and the Art of Dying, are "gamers getting their kicks from dying?

Labels:

Clive Thompson wrote an interesting article, it's called "Gamers Get Their Kicks From Dying." Take a look at this passage.

As I watch my corpse crumple to the ground, sure, I feel annoyed. But my annoyance isn't as powerful as my sense of release: I can feel my whole body unwind. Indeed, I'm often so wrapped up in the game that I don't even realize how badly I'm clenched up. I may not want to die; but for the sake of my mental health, I probably need to.

How this is so true, many times I have been into a game so intensely that I don't even notice what is going on around me. When I would play World of Warcraft my whole being would be in the game. I can remember the anxiety and thrill when exploring new regions, or fighting another player. I find it amazing how games can take us through a wide array of emotions. Happiness, anger, and sadness just as a few. Games have changed the landscape of entertainment and continue to do so. I just look forward to see where this industry will lead us.

Check out the article and let me know what you think. What kind of experiences have you had? [Article]

Old Thoughts - Religious

Labels: ,

This is something that I wrote a long time ago, still come back to it alot. If you do not wish to read this please just continue on to the next post.

I’m still hounded by the fact that I am pained by my own humanity. Yet it is something that I can never over come by myself. Is there a way to over come this? If we remain in Christ, if we grow up in Christ, will we reach a point where we will no longer sin? Ever since I’ve been saved I’ve tried to live a life flawless. This is something that I cannot do! In 1 Corn. 12:7-10, Paul had a thorn in his flesh, to keep him from growing conceited. I do not feel like I’m growing conceited, and I am no where near Paul. But I still feel as if there is a thorn in my side that pains me. I really can’t get past this whole reality of sin and the law of sin. Maybe it is me, maybe it’s the fact that I’m over analyzing my life. I am reminded of the song “I Pictured it,” by John Reuben. In it he says;

“And then there was me: Analyzing life more than I was living, anything possible good, I destroyed before the chance was ever given. See if I never have anything I’ll never have to lose anything; but then again if I never had anything worth losing I guess I lost everything. Either way, you could say, Pain will become a result from both, so actually I’m giving into the very thing that I fear the most: Losing it all, everything, completely unaware, that a fear of failure was the one thing that was taking me there. Fear of life, fear of love, fear of man, failure to relate. How I and God, and his voice to me would even begin to translate. So I wait, to escape this condition of rationalizing my own destruction. But I keep on listening to the voices that don’t deserve my discussion.”

I really am unsure of things. My mind can manipulate itself, yet it is not smart enough to realize it is being manipulated. Am I concentrating to much on myself and not enough on God? I know that there is a point that you can focus so much on your sin that it can over cloud the grace of God. Then we are no longer living by faith, we a living by sight, and we cannot live by sight, but by faith. Through faith I have been saved by grace, this is what John tells us.

I guess I should remember what Paul says in Gal. 1:10. “Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God? Or am I Trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.” Yet now I am answered but God through Galatians. “If, while we seek to be justified in Christ, it becomes evident that we ourselves are sinners…” (Gal. 2:17). I am a sinner! Why is this so hard for me to accept? Yet, “…through the law I died to the law so that I might live for God. I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me” (Gal. 2:19-20). Am I still ruled by sin? Paul states in Romans 7:18-24;
18I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do--this I keep on doing. 20Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.
21So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22For in my inner being I delight in God's law; 23but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members. 24What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?

I will state again that in verse 25 of Romans chapter 7, it is Christ Jesus who saves me from this wretched body of death. I will fear no condemnation, “because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life sets me free from the law of sin and death. Yet this still does not answer my question. Why if I am in Christ do I still sin! It is my human nature; it is my humanity shining through. This is something that I cannot get…Yet as I see this, how can I even know the love of God and what Jesus has done for us if I don't know my own sinfulness. I guess to answer my own question, we are sinners, and we need to know this so that we will rely on the grace of God, but we must leave it there if we dwell on this to much we lose our focus which should be the grace of God!

Seven Deadly Sin Combinded

Labels: ,

Here an interesting one. What do you get when you combine the seven deadly sins?

On that note, looks like Pope Benedict XVI has expanded the seven to 14 deadly sins. Apparently the Vatican has added 7 new sins for the age of globalisation. The list was published in L’Osservatore Romano. This has come about because the Pope "deplored the 'decreasing sense of sin' in today’s 'securalised world' and the falling numbers of Roman Catholics going to confession." [Source]

Sometimes I feel that we just need to step back from out daily lives and take a look around us and be willing to take that leap of faith and help someone out. Please read this story below and let me know what your thoughts are. Do you believe that this is a waste of money, or do you believe that giving the money was the write thing to do?

"On Friday, a friend of mine (from work) and I went for our usual Friday coffee run to Starbucks. About five minutes from work. We get there, she parks the car and we walk to Starbucks. On the way to the coffee house, I noticed a homeless woman about ten feet from Starbucks. She was holding a cardboard in her hands. When we got closer, I saw that the cardboard said "Hungry ... need a place to stay ... can I have your change". Well, I did not have change, so I gave the woman twenty dollars. She did not say anything but smiled. My friend and I walked into Starbucks." [Source]

Sarotech's Wizplat NAS-20

Labels:

Check out this new gadget. It's a NAS box, that can support a pair of 2tb storage devices. It features a pair of USB jacks, built-in iTunes and print servers, and even a BitTorrent server which should allow your home PC to take a rest from your 7 x 24 downloading scheme. This looks to be like a nice storage device, though I wonder what the price tag will be. [Source]

Police: 4-Year-Old Girl Drunk At School

Labels:

THE VILLAGE, Okla. -- Authorities are investigating the apparent intoxication of a 4-year-old girl at an Oklahoma City elementary school on Wednesday, police said.

Oklahoma City television station KOCO reported that the child was carried out of Andrew Johnson Elementary School by a paramedic, according to an officer with The Village Police Department.

"We don't believe it happened on school ground. We believe it happened before she got to school today," said Deputy Chief Steve Jagosh.

Jagosh said his department was called by school officials to check on the child, who they described as acting strangely. Teachers told officers that they smelled an odor of alcohol on the girl.

The girl was taken to Children's Hospital in good condition, authorities said. However, Oklahoma City spokeswoman Kathleen Kennedy denied that the child was transported anywhere.

Police said they will investigate how the child was able to access alcohol.

After the child is released from the hospital, officials said, she will be taken into Department of Human Services custody, police said.[Source]

Mariah Carey New Song

Labels: ,

The guys over at Dave and Thomas found the new song from Mariah Carey, you can take a look at it below.

Here is what they had to say about it. "It sounds EXACTLY like all her other shit but with the addition of a schoolgirl outfit and less clothing than usual. Needless to say, we here at Dave and Thomas really enjoy the video.

Throw in the nerdy Jack McBrayer (Kenneth the intern on NBC's 30 Rock) who spends the video fantasizing about Mariah in various slinky outfits and we almost would turn the audio up on the video. Did we mention the schoolgirl outfit?" [Source]

Blending Goldfish is not a Crime....

Labels: ,

Here is an interesting story, the Danish artist Marco Evaristti, who was apparently trying to test visitors' sense of right and wrong set up blenders with goldfish and told the visitors that if they wanted to turn on the blenders they could. One visitor did and killed two fish.

The Gallery was find for animal cruelty but a court overturned the decision. Judge Preben Bagger stated that the fish were killed "instantly" and "humanely." The court had an expert witness from the blenders' maker that said the fish had probably died within one second of the blender being switched on. A vet states that the fish would have died painlessly.

The case went to court because the gallery refused the pay the fine stating that artistic freedom was at stake. The artist wanted to "place people before a dilemma: to choose between life and death." [Source]

Co-Creator of D&D Passed Away on Tuesday

It's a sad day for Dungeons and Dragon Fans. Tuesday Ernest Gary Gygax passed away at the age of 69. He created the famous D&D game in 1974 with Dave Arneson. Gygax had been suffering from health problems for several years.

Gygax always enjoyed hearing from the game's legion of devoted fans, many of whom would stop by the family's home in Lake Geneva, about 55 miles southwest of Milwaukee, his wife said. Despite his declining health, he hosted weekly games of Dungeons & Dragons as recently as January, she said.[Source]

Mac Mini's rival

Labels:

"Everex's gPC mini is the third in its new lineup of cheap, linux-powered computers.
With smoothly rounded corners and a pearly-white paint job, it's like a Mac Mini from another universe. And that's certainly what its designers want you to think: at $500, it's a mass market PC that comes in a similar tiny form and at an even tinier price."

This Mini PC is looking to rival mac in the area of small desktops, but from what I can see that only positive that comes with this PC is the fact the the hard drive is bigger than the mac's, but I believe that people will be having issues with the Linux system. not many people are willing to give up the well known OSx and Windows systems. Only time will tell on this little machine. I for one would go with the Mac mini. [Source]
